Success of Security Measures Not to Be Measured by Their Success

The News: President Bush pronounced, "Our success in Iraq must not be measured by the enemy's ability to get a car-bombing into the evening news," he said. "No matter how good the security, terrorists will always be able to explode a bomb on a crowded street. In places like Israel, ....

The Note: The story here isn’t that bush said Iraq should be like Israel but that he’s admitted that “security measures” are useless.

New Testament on Net alleged to violate Constitution

The News: Truthout reports that, "At the Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Army base, military chaplains have been holding Bible classes for US soldiers using study guides that appear to be anti-Semitic." The accusation was made by "the nonprofit watchdog group, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an organization that seeks to enforce the law mandating the separation between church and state..." [ Hmmmm...] The Officers Christian Fellowship Neighborhood Study Guides were written by Major George Kuykendall, and actually [!!! ] quote portions of the New Testament, including a passage from Galatians that asserts Paul was persecuted by the Jews. [No!] A spokeman for the group denied any anti-semitism and stated that the fellowship was simply discussing the texts as they appeared in the New Testament. "But for Mikey Weinstein, the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the religious teachings are not only blatantly anti-Semitic, but he believes disseminating it over the Internet tramples upon the Constitution."

The Note: Disseminating the New Testament over the internet violates the Constitution? Amazing! What sort of twisted thinking contorts itself to that conclusion? The Gospel is "anti-semitic" and ergo translates into a violation of the Establishment Clause? Plus ça change. It’s all a dissimulation in service of an ethnical cause.

Fruit from a Poisonous Tree

The News: Uri Avneri, the socialist and peace-activist Israel journalist writes:
"Concerned friends recently e-mailed me some hair-raising quotes from a statement by Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel and the spiritual leader of the settlers and the entire religious Zionist camp. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the rabbi decreed that it is impermissible to have compassion with the civilian population of Gaza if that imperils Israeli soldiers. His son, Shmuel, interpreted this decree on behalf of his father: if the killing of 100 Arabs is not sufficient to stop the launching of Qassam rockets at Israel, then 1000 must be killed. And if that is not sufficient, then 10,000, and 100,000 and even a million. All this to stop the Qassams, which in all the years have not succeeded in killing a dozen Jews.
"What is the connection between this "religious" view and the God who (in Genesis 18) promised not to destroy Sodom if 10 righteous people could be found there?
"What is the difference between this moral perception and that of the Nazis who executed 10 hostages for every German soldier killed by the resistance?
"The rabbi's decree did not arouse any reaction. There was no outcry, neither from his flock nor from the general public. The number of rabbis who publicly support such methods has risen to the hundreds. Most of them come from the settlements. This is a "religious" outlook that grew up in the poisoned atmosphere of the occupation, a religion of occupation. It shames the Jewish religion, present and past.
"No wonder that a person with a strong religious conscience, Avraham Burg, former Speaker of the Knesset and Head of the Jewish Agency, this week renounced Zionism and demanded to abolish the definition of Israel as a Jewish State."

The Note: No wonder that there are those of us who thought that the idea of a Jewish state was poisoned seed all along.

Avneri also points out that the occupation is destroying the Israeli Army. Yep; just as it is destroying the Ah'murkan.

The Unsung Compassionate USA

The News: On Friday President Bush held a press conference alongside Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Said Bush, "I don't think America gets enough credit for trying to help improve people's lives. And so my trip is to explain, as clearly as I can, that our nation is generous and compassionate; that when we see poverty, we care; that when we see illiteracy, we want to do something about it; that when we find there to be a deficiency in health care, we'll help to the extent we can." Chavez's reaction? "Gringo Go Home."

The Note: The utterly astonishing thing -- amazing beyond belief -- is that Bush actually thinks this shit will fly in Ibero-America?

Teaching the Natives Liberation through Self-Loathing

061215

John Ross (Counterpunch’s Mexico “expert”) has launched off on a diatribe against Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” the last scene of which apparently involves the shot of a friar-held Cross appearing over the sea’s horizon. This scene triggered the usual politically correct reflex about the evil white man and what Ross calls “Judaic[sic]-Christian” civilization. Ross did bother to note that “the Maya” had engaged in ritual sacrifice; but this, he said, had to be understood in context as part of a culturally valid cosmological belief system. Ah well, in that case ...........

Ross is your typical bullshit leftist. His articles on Mexico are not ill-informed but are skewed by a fawning indigenism and inverse racism. Whatever “the Indian” does is wise, marvellous and good. Whatever the the Spanish do is corrupt, oppressive and bad. Mestizos (so long as they are sufficiently brownish) are lumped in with the good. Were this merely a matter of naively gushing over the natives, one could roll one's eyes and be done with it. But the nastiness of inverse-racism is not merely that it embodies a form of self-loathing but that it uses the "innocent victim" as a pawn in that self-loathing. In effect, the object of devotion is merely a prop and scripted player in what amounts to a self-involved masochistic socio-psycho drama.

Resort to this black vs white paradigm, cribbed from the muck of an Anglo-American social psychosis, comprises its own form of cultural imperialism. Treating the indigenous "brown" peoples of Ibero-Indian America as Negroes Lite, it embroils them in the sordid cycle of contempt and recrimination (and self-recrimiantion) that characterizes U.S. racial relations. The truly vicious thing, in so far as Mexico is concerned, is that because most "Indians" are both racially and culturally mestizo, using them as pawns in a game of white self-loathing in fact ends up teaching them to loathe themselves. Beyond mere imperialism, this is a form of cultural genocide.

Under Ross’s poisoned pen, there is an even nastier twist. Whereas Abolitionist propaganda was waged in the name of Christianity against the undeniable evil of chattelization, Ross inverts black-white manicheism to insinuate an attack on Christianity.

To see how this is the case, one must first return to and grasp the utter inanity of Ross's excuse making for human sacrifice. It is certainly the case that Aztec and Mayan sacrifices can be understood as a “cosmological” phase in human religious evolution but it is simply insane to protest against the historical necessity of moving beyond that phase into another. What would Ross have had, multi-cultural heart-rippings on “Rainbow Day”? One can hardly imagine Marx or Lenin issuing a call for socialist validation of primitive economic rituals. In fact, I can hardly imagine any halfway reasonable person failing to understand that this belief system, howsoever cosmologically magnificent, had to end. Once that fundamental fact is understood, the question becomes, " How?" From this premise, the arrival of Catholic Christianity can only be seen as a good thing. There really is no room for debate.

Gibson’s cinematic portrayal may allow for a simplistic “converting-the-natives” interpretation. But if it does, it does so only for the simple minded. Those with a more nuanced understanding will understand that Catholicism was the best possible vehicle for the adaptation of Indian cosmologies into the larger Christian civilization and, thus, into the modern world. The Dominican and Franciscans friars who were dispatched at Cortez's request understood this (and the nuances it entailed) perfectly. Anyone who knows anything about the subject matter understands that while the Indian is formally Catholic he remains en su profundo cosmologically Indian. In fact, the genius of what Protestants sneeringly deride as “pagan” Catholicism, is that it provided a universal lingo which allowed for a communion of beliefs that are rife with variety beneath formal rubrics.

Anyone who has actually looked at the Catholicism of the Mexican Indian and even of many mestizos cannot fail to see this. Its synchretic character is everywhere, except perhaps the sealed off closets of ~sinarquistas~ or Tridentine fusspots. Such synchretism is actually a very natural thing. After all, notwithstanding our public and formal affirmations, we each understand and tint the “truth” through our own private and unique experiences of life; and what is true of individuals is true of groups. Today's Indian is not pre-Columbian but post Cortesian and even the racially pure are culturally and intellectually blended. Ross's little psycho-drama in fact seeks to subvert the religion and culture of today's indigenous people.

Ross’s anti-Christian animus is also betrayed by his slipping in of the word “Judaic.” Why this curious construction? The insinuated implication is that there is nothing truly Jewish in this conquest aspect of so-called “Judeo-Christian” civilization. No, no! It only appears to be Jewish-like, hence the "Judaic." Isn't that cute? Since the late 19th century, Jewish academics and social shakers have made a pronounced effort to insinuate the concept of a “Judeo-Christian” civilization into public discourse, getting people to think that Western Civilization is really a "half Jewish" joint enterpise. Of course, this is a false concept, since the word "Christianity" itself includes those surviving Jewish ideas that were transmitted to the larger Greco-Roman world. Nevertheless, now that this deformed graft has taken, Ross ducks out from under its necessary implications and consequences and seeks dissolution of the "partnership" in an adjective, distancing himself and other Jews from the supposed cultural genocide of the Indian by the Spaniard.

It's quite a tour de force. Ross launches an attack against Catholicism which ignores its great synchretic achievement. Ignoring this achievement and in the name of standing up for the 'liberation' of the Indian, he turns the Indian against his own traditions and identity. Because Ross is himself Jewish, and will never think of himself as christian in any shared or hybrid way, the hyphen in "Judeo-Christian" is actually meaningless to him. The perpetual disassociation of Jewish selfhood from whatever is Gentile, leads him to think that the Indian indulges in the same sort self-alienation from the greater body of humanity. He does not. He is not the pre-Cortesian native he once was, he is the very thing Ross wants to get him to loathe as he himself does.

Report: Israel Used Dangerous Experimental Weapon in Gaza Attacks

Meanwhile, the Israeli military is facing accusations its used an experimental weapon during recent attacks on Palestinians in Gaza. The Italian television station RAI reports the weapons have led to abnormally serious physical injuries, including amputated limbs and severe burns. The report was produced by the same journalists that exposed the US used phosphorous as an offensive weapon during attacks on Fallujah. The weapon is believed to be similar to the US-made Dense Inert Metal Explosive, or DIME. In addition to inflicting major shrapnel wounds, the weapon is believed to be highly carcinogenic and harmful to the environment.

UN: Israeli Checkpoints Increase 40% in West Bank

Meanwhile in the West Bank, a UN aid agency is reporting Israeli military checkpoints around Palestinian towns have grown by nearly forty percent over the past year. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says there are now more than five hundred and twenty checkpoints and obstacles around the West Bank, causing severe disruption to Palestinian life. The news comes on the heels of recent developments showing Israel is also expanding its settlements. Last month, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert authorized the construction of nearly 700 new homes in settlements on the West Bank.

The Note: Repugnance rules. The narcosis-media does not report much on DIME and even DemocracyNow, doesn't quite get the sado-satanic picture. DIME weapons produce microscopic shrapnel. Because of that, surgeons will not detect the wound which will go on infecting and destroying organs under the bandages so to speak. Even if doctors do suspect DIME shrapnel it is almost impossible to pick out the pieces because they are so small. It's much like being shredded from within.

What kind of non-human intelligence would invent such a thing? What kind of sub-human villain would use it? Meanwhile, ever bewailing its pathetic victim hood, Israel is slowly turning the West Bank into history's biggest concentration camp. It will do so by dripping, degrees so that people become inured even if they notice. But the end is known.

Neither Israel nor its whore-maiden are long for the historical stage. They will go the way of all corrupt and cruel arrogant powers. They will not be missed.

Deploring Your Way to the Bank

The News: Twentieth Century Fox launched a Christian home-video label on Tuesday, becoming the first major studio with a unit devoted to the church-going audience that turned "The Passion of the Christ" into a blockbuster.

The new FoxFaith banner will acquire Christian-themed films produced outside the studio and release them on DVD, with the help of a marketing network tied into 90,000 churches and 14 million households nationwide, said Steve Feldstein, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Feldstein said the biggest impetus for creating FoxFaith was the stunning commercial success of Mel Gibson's 2004 crucifixion tale "The Passion of the Christ." The Aramaic-language film grossed $612 million worldwide, driven in large part by a marketing campaign that targeted evangelical Christians.

Fox, like much of Hollywood, passed up an opportunity to release "Passion" theatrically but ended up with U.S. home-video distribution rights, selling more than 15 million units of the film on DVD.

The Note: Steve Feldstein? Gee... so Weisenthall and the ADL protest the existence of Passion Plays and wail about blood libels while Murdock rakes in the cash peddling them. What a surprise people would think of Jews as avaricious hypocrites.

Sadist & Cowards

Item: Mentally Ill Prisoner Tortured to Death in Michigan

Attorneys in Michigan are preparing to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the state’s Department of Corrections over the death of prisoner who suffered from a bipolar disorder. According to the Detroit Free Press, Timothy Joe Sounders died after spending most of his last four days with his arms and legs strapped to a steel bed in four-point restraints in a hot isolation cell. He was naked and soaked in his urine. He was 21 years old. Authorities haven't released an autopsy yet but one expert witness called it "death by torture." The Michigan Department of Corrections initially told his family that he had died in his sleep. Sounders is at least the third mentally ill prisoner to die under similar circumstances in Michigan in recent years. Also expected to be sued in the case is Correctional Medical Services, the private company that handles health services in Michigan’s prisons.

Item: Senate Moves to OK Detention of U.S. Citizens

The Bush administration has slipped in a major change to the Senate bill on interrogations that would allow U.S. citizens to be detained as enemy combatants. Initially the bill defined an enemy combatant as anyone who engaged in hostilities against the United States or its allies but the definition has been expanded to include anyone who has materially supported hostilities against the United States or its allies. The Washington Post reports that human rights experts expressed concern that the language in the new provision would be a precedent-setting congressional endorsement for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens. Meanwhile on Monday, a group of activists from Code Pink stood up in protest over the bill during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. The activists stood with their backs toward the Senators while wearing t-shirts that spelled out the phrase “No Torture.” The activists called on the Senators to remove a section of the bill that strips detainees of the right to habeas corpus.

U.S. Looses its Allure

The News: Le Monde had a story about a Keith Reinhard and his Business for Diplomatic Action ... a group of U.S. companies desperately trying to gussy up the Ah'murkan image so that they don’t revolt the global consumer even more. Turns out adolescents around the world aren’t buying American, don’t give a shit about the US and would rather visit Canada.

Afghan Surprise

The News: The Guardian reports that Afghanistan has gone to hell in a handbasket. "Nobody saw this coming. It's pretty dire," admitted one official in Kabul.

The Note: What unbelievable, fucking morons. It really makes one wonder. The imbeciles had the experience of the Russians who had the experience of the British who had the experience of the Greeks. They all just hate us

The News:
Visiting Russia Chavez called the United States "a mindless, blind and stupid giant that does not understand the world, does not understand human rights, does not understand anything in humanism, culture and consciousness."

Ivan Safranchuk, head of the Moscow bureau of the Center for Defense Information, a U.S. think tank, said such outbursts by Chavez fitted well with growing anti-American sentiments among Kremlin officials. "Venezuela will serve Russia well by slamming the United States in the United Nations Security Council, using words Moscow will like but would not want to utter itself," Safranchuk said.

A Forthright Reply

The Note: Mexican Newspaper founder replies to Israel's Demand for an apology.

"Mr. Amabassador of Israel in Mexico, David Dadonn. With regard to the open letter signed by a group of Mexicans in which we aksed for the suspension of agression by Israel against Lebanon, You have publically denounced us as terrorist and have demanded that we retract.

"It happens, Mr. Ambassador, that during the Holocaust there was a crime of commission by the Nazis as well as a crime of ommission by all those others who guarded their silence in face of that atrocity.

"For my part, I shall not incur into the crime of omission. I will not guard my silence in face of what I consider to be sistematic slaughter perpetrated by the State of Israel. The Jewish people have a right to live. So too do the Lebanese and Palestinians."

Yes - We have No Delusions

The News: A State Department group will urge the Bush administration to begin preparing for an intervention in the event of the death of President Fidel Castro. The group, the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, was created by President Bush three years ago. Their recommendations include creating an $80 million dollar fund to promote US initiatives in Cuba. An annex to the report lists several proposals on how the Bush administration could undermine Castro’s government. Cuban parliamentarian Ricardo Alarcon likened the report to a declaration of war. Despicable Depravity

The News: The New York Times reports that US forces plan to bulldoze several blocks in the middle of the city of Ramadi and convert them into a new “Green Zone” similar to the US command area in Baghdad. Lt. Col. Stephen Neary said some of the razed land will be turned into a park. He added: "Aesthetically it will be an improvement." The military is engaged in a large scale operation in Ramadi that has already led to the flight of thousands of residents. According to the Times, one poster displayed in the local US base reads: “Be polite, be professional and have a plan to kill everyone you meet.” Another poster refers to the name of the military unit and says: "Kilo Company: Killed more people than cancer."

The Note: Despicable.

New York Times accused of Child Endangerment and Treason for divulging Secret Government Terrorist Spying Program.

My great aunt was probably the last true American. She took heart-felt umbrage when banks first had the gall to install security cameras, back in the early ‘60’s. “I don’t want anyone spying over my shoulder when I’m about my private business,” she said. It is a measure of how far we have sunk to a level lower than chickens that my great aunt’s notions strike us, not simply as quaint, but as alien.

Those were the days when Americans held to strange notions like “going about your private business in public.” If your business was private -- which it invariably was -- then it was no body else’s business, not even the government’s -- especially not the government’s.

Those were also the days when people spoke of their bankers in much the same sense and tone that they spoke of their pastors or priests. The bank was where you confided your money and it was insulting, to say the least, that your fiduciary should treat you as some sort of common criminal afoot.

Those days have been swept into the dustbins of history thanks to a people hankering for "safety" and a judiciary whoring itself to executive power.

In California v. Greenwood (1988) 486 U.S. 35, the craven lickspittles on the Supreme Court held that my great aunt had no expectation of privacy in her garbage. Having deposited one’s garbage “in an area particularly suited for public inspection and, in a manner of speaking, public consumption,” a person “could have had no reasonable expectation of privacy in the inculpatory items that they discarded.”

Of course, they had no expectation of privacy in the non-inculpatory items either since a cop can’t tell which is which until he starts pawing through the mess. The court's toss-in of the word “inculpatory” was one of those slimey sophistical tricks courts resort to when they want to add some emotional weight to an otherwise shaky argument -- in this case, the helpful insinuation that the garbage owners were guilty criminals anyways and so we needn't focus to hard on a rummage-rule that applies just as much to the anyways innocent.

Behind obfuscations for the unwary, Greenwood explained that the true reason my aunt had no expectation of privacy in her garbage was that privacy was lost once the garbage was placed “at the curb for the express purpose of conveying it to a third party, the trash collector, who might himself have sorted through respondents' trash or permitted others, such as the police, to do so.”

Entrusting garbage, the Court intoned, was no different than dialing telephone numbers; and “we doubt that people in general entertain any actual expectation of privacy in the numbers they dial” (Smith v. Maryland (1979) 442 U.S. 735.) Say what ?? When was this!? 1979? Yep.

“All telephone users," the Court pronounced, "realize that they must ‘convey’ phone numbers to the telephone company, since it is through telephone company switching equipment that their calls are completed.” Having “conveyed” their numbers a third party, one can hardly complain when the third party happily conveys it to a fourth party, (government cops), on request and without any warrant. After all, the court went on, “when he used his phone, petitioner voluntarily conveyed numerical information to the telephone company and ‘exposed’ that information to its equipment in the ordinary course of business. In so doing, petitioner assumed the risk that the company would reveal to police the numbers he dialed.”

In short, if you don’t want to be exposed, lock yourself in your closet.

The Smith and Greenwood cases stand for two inter related propositions. First, that you have no privacy when you “expose” yourself or your effects to public view; and, second, that you have no privacy in things you “convey” to others even if “the information is revealed on the assumption that it will be used only for a limited purpose and the confidence placed in the third party will not be betrayed.” Why throwing away a packet of old love letters is tantamount to reading them out loud in the park; and as for ringing someone up on a phone, well you might as well walk about naked. As for spy cameras in banks -- well if my great aunt did not want to be spied upon in public, she should have transacted her business by mail.....

But wait! Aren’t letters “conveyed” to a third party on the “assumption” that confidence “will not be betrayed”? Anyone who expects the Supreme Court to protect internet privacy or to prohibit the State Security Services from keeping track of international money wires, ought to check into a sanatorium to have his “assumptions” given the once over by men in white coats.

The underlying and truly stinking perversity of Smith and Greenwood is that they invert the positions of "free space" and "prisons". Your locked closet becomes the place where you are free to left alone; whereas out and open in public you are are subject to at will surveillance, just as if you were in prison.

Dissenting in Greenwood, Justice Brennan wrote, “Scrutiny of another's trash is contrary to commonly accepted notions of civilized behavior. I suspect, therefore, that members of our society will be shocked to learn that the Court, the ultimate guarantor of liberty, deems unreasonable our expectation that the aspects of our private lives that are concealed safely in a trash bag will not become public.”

Alas, the public was not shocked at all. For two months, Brennan wrote, “the police clawed through the trash that ...Greenwood left in opaque, sealed bags on the curb outside his home. Complete strangers minutely scrutinized their bounty, undoubtedly dredging up intimate details of Greenwood's private life and habits. The intrusions proceeded without a warrant, and no court before or since has concluded that the police acted on probable cause to believe Greenwood was engaged in any criminal activity.” But not a peep against this violation of privacy was heard -- not from our guardian press; not from an outraged people. On the contrary, in places like California, the people voted to overturn that state’s rule that a person’s garbage was private and beyond search absent a warrant.

Now, long after the ship has sunk, the New York Times reveals that the Government is keeping track of bank wire transfers made on what the high court will undoubtedly call "the open wires” of the telephone network. In the past several months, the press has also revealed, that the Government is keeping track of whom we mail, access or visit on the internet "highway". A feeble whine of protest arises from the so-called “liberal” flank of the political spectrum, while Thug Staat Bush and its congressional brown shirts go on word-punching offensives. Needless to say, the Times and its half-hearted allies will take all this lying down. They will palaver about the public’s right to know when they should instead excoriate the Administration and call for its impeachment en masse

The people's pipers in the press are at last getting around to questioning the so-called “excesses” of the Bush administration. But where were these folks when the Greenwood and Smith cases were handed down? In the modern world “excesses” do not happen overnight. Tipping thresholds may be reached at any moment; but modern states are huge multifarious bureaucracies. They move slowly and only after millions of memos have been written and thousands of regulations and practices put into place and practice. The destruction of our Liberties and the foundations of a police state began long ago with the Nixon Court.

For close to 40 years, repulsive creepy crawly creatures like inJustice Rankquist have been at work in the dank and dark gnawing away at the Bill of Rights and giving the State the “tools” it needed to “protect us” from crime, drugs, pornography, and now “terrorists”. Where was the press before? Where was there an outcry as, case by case, the courts drove a thousand cuts into the Bill of Rights, while a slithering Congress aided and abetted this real treason by establishing secret courts, national security exceptions and a plethora of other state privileges. Oh... no doubt the Times deemed those stories to be news “fit to print” on some back page crowded into the left margin by trendy Bloomingdale ads; but what was evidently not fit was any manifestation of outrage. Certainly nothing that would have given a voice to my aunt.

My great aunt stood with the Founders of the Republic, because she, like them, was able to see the principle involved in small things. That capacity is something lacking from the over-paid, self-adulating, pea brains in the Murkan press. It is also something lacking from a public whose only principles of action are its gluttonous wants and concocted fears. And extensive industries exist to feed both.

In a few days, we will all be subjected to nauseating spectacles of Murkans indulging their “freedom” and “independence.” By now chronically obese denizens will drag their larded bodies to the Washington Mall to listen to loud, trashy, music and to hear Hollywood’s bimbettes du jour squeal about our great land, our great this-n-that and our great everything. The participants will hug their perpetually “at risk children”, gush over our "valianservicemenanwimin” and puff up their sagging bellies to make like a chest while they sing about living in the land of the brave. And they will do all this once they have been granted access to the fenced-off public mall after being frisked, searched, scanned, and identified by armed safety thugs in state employ.

It would be sad were it not so revolting. In the end, history will shed few tears for Murka’s last generations who, like the Romans of yore, have become a nation of slaves while thinking they were masters of the world.
